Perhaps you’ve been learning English for a while now, but the methods you’ve been using haven’t been working for you, or you haven’t made much progress because you haven’t been practicing regularly. Or perhaps you’re taking lessons for the first time, thinking “It’s never too late to start something”. Whatever the case may be, you’re a beginner-level English student.
First of all, congratulations! You’ve taken the first step towards achieving your goal. The hard part is behind you. Don’t let the fact that you’re at the beginning of this process discourage you. Yes, there is a long road ahead, but we think the journey can be just as enjoyable as the destination. Don’t you agree? In this article, we’ll be drawing you a roadmap of what you’ll be able to do in English and the level you can hope to arrive at after one year of learning with Cambly. Let’s get started!
How Many Lessons Will I Take in One Year?
Cambly has a variety of membership options. You can pick a membership that suits your schedule and your budget. We’re going to base our roadmap on a membership that spans 12 months and comprises 30-minute lessons three times a week. That means 90 minutes a week, 6 hours a month, or 72 hours a year of one-on-one English lessons. You and your loved ones will hardly be able to believe the progress you make in your English as a result of regularly attending lessons, watching video recordings of your sessions, and going over the slides shown in class.
Where Do I Begin?
If you want to take lessons but don’t know where to start, we suggest that you first pick a tutor that you feel you’d like learning with. How would you go about doing that? Click on this link to take a look at the tutors who offer lessons for beginners. Check out their profiles and watch their introduction videos. Then, take some lessons with a couple of different tutors that catch your eye. After that, you can select one or two tutors you like best and arrange your class schedule by booking lessons when they’re available. Booking your sessions ahead of time will allow you to have a regularly planned class schedule and help you prepare for your lessons.
You’ve picked your tutors. And now you’re wondering “What are my tutor and I going to do in our lessons?” Not to worry. We offer a variety of courses to choose from. You can sign up to any course you like and make changes to your courses whenever you please.
Here is a roadmap for the courses you could progressively pursue:
1. English Conversation 101
This is a course that guides absolute beginners through their fears of learning English by getting them started on a path to speaking the language.
It consists of 10 lessons. Since you’ll likely be covering one topic each lesson, by the end of the month, you’ll have learned all the basic skills you need to then start developing your English further through practice on Cambly. You will be at a stage where you can discuss basic topics with your tutors using the grammatical structures and vocabulary you learned in class.
2. English Conversation 102
You can continue to develop your ability to discuss a variety of simple topics with English 102. This course is composed of lessons that help you practice talking about subjects such as the weather or your hobbies to make you a more confident English speaker. You will have the chance to make small talk with classmates and tell them stories to hone your conversation skills. This course also consists of 10 lessons. At the end of the course, you will have completed the second month of your learning program.
3. Basic Conversation Topics
The next course we recommend you take is Basic Conversation Topics. Completion of this course will get you to an A2 level of vocabulary knowledge. You will be able to discuss a variety of daily matters with more confidence. While discussing topics in class, your tutors will help correct your errors, which will develop your understanding of English grammar. By taking the 10 lessons included in this course, you will have completed the third month of your learning program.
Congratulations! You’ve reached the A2 level and feel more comfortable talking in English with native speakers. You’re learning from your tutor’s corrections and building your vocabulary. As a result, you can talk about your life and experiences as they relate to the class discussion topics with more ease.
So, what’s next? We recommend a couple of different options:
- Continuing your lessons with two tutors and working on your speaking practice with one while targeting more specific areas you need assistance with such as grammar or reading with the other.
- Pursuing a variety of courses related to your interest areas. These could be English for Travel, Life in the Internet Age, or Movies and Television, for instance.
- Pursuing courses based on your English competency level.
Intermediate Conversation Topics
This course helps you develop your vocabulary on a CEFR B1-B2 Level. You will develop your reading and listening comprehension skills, and work on becoming a more articulate speaker. You will also learn correct use of grammar. (This course consists of 10 lessons. Its estimated duration is one month. This completes the fourth month of your learning program.)
Intermediate Conversation Topics Part 2
In this course, you’ll practice discussing topics such as finances, exercise, nutrition, and social media. You’ll also learn vocabulary on a B1-B2 Level. (This course consists of 10 lessons. Its estimated duration is one month. This completes the fifth month of your learning program.)
Advanced Conversation Topics
This course will help you express yourself coherently while discussing theoretical concepts. You will learn vocabulary on a C1-C2 Level. (This course consists of 10 lessons. Because it involves detailed discussion of a variety of theoretical concepts, its duration could span 1-1.5 months. This would bring you to the end of around the seventh month of your learning program.)
At this stage, you will have reached a B2 Level at the minimum. What you’ll need to decide now is what you want your lessons to focus on. If you want to develop your business English speaking skills, learn terminology that relates to the field you work in, get help preparing for job interviews or professional presentations, or simply want to communicate with your international colleagues with more ease, you should take a look at courses such as: Introduction to Public Speaking, Business English, Workshop: Practicing Presentations, and Workshop: Practicing Job Interviews, to name just a few.
Don’t forget. You can use the search system to find tutors who work in your professional field to get the most out of your business English learning experience. For instance, by searching for keywords such as marketing, engineering, medical, HR, or pilot, you can easily find a tutor who specializes in those areas.
If you’d prefer for your lessons to be geared towards academics, you can pursue our Academic English course for the remainder of your membership. The English found in textbooks and used in academic circles has specific terminology and is more complex than everyday English. This course was designed with various research identifying the principal characteristics of academic English in mind, to help you express yourself with confidence in academic settings.
If your goal is to prepare for exams like the IELTS and TOEFL, you can enroll in our IELTS Speaking Practice or TOEFL Speaking Practice courses, and learn from teachers who have gotten students ready for English competency exams in the past.
