I’m a 35-year-old IT professional and have a story to share with you. It’s the story of how I was able to advance my career and grow professionally. It’s impossible to achieve success if you don’t update your skillset. And English for IT is fundamental in this day and age.
It all started when I decided to ask for a raise. I was working for a large corporation, but holding a junior position. Then, after a few years working as one of their IT professionals, I requested a promotion. But then my boss posed a very important question, “How can I give you a promotion if you don’t speak English?”
I went back home that day and couldn’t get my mind off it. I talked to my wife over dinner about how I had never been able to learn English and had no time to focus on acquiring a new skill. But supportive as she was, she encouraged me to give it another try and really focus this time.

To be honest, I felt a little too old and just didn’t know how to start speaking English. All I wanted was professional stability and a good position with the knowledge I already had.
I definitely wasn’t planning on studying again at 35. I really excelled at my job. I knew all the processes and could write code like no one else. However, after my boss asked me that question, I understood something was missing: I had to learn English.

I was then told I’d have to take an English test if I really wanted that promotion. I didn’t know what the new position would entail, but I decided to face the challenge anyway. I was just grateful for the opportunity and didn’t want to let it pass.
English for IT Test
After 20 minutes, I was given an English for IT test, which included some of the specific terms used in IT and a few questions related to the topic. Since I had already told my native teacher I was primarily interested in English for IT, a large portion of the test was nothing new to me.
I’m not even kidding, it took me less than 25 minutes to finish it. I got 17 out 20 questions right. And guess what – I became the new IT manager in my department!
How I’m Doing Now
My life has changed completely. After I got promoted, I bought a brand-new car, my own house, and started investing in my own business. And it was all thanks to Cambly!
