Birçok yerde karşımıza çıkan bu kelimenin çok farklı kullanımları mevcut. Genel kullanımını muhtemelen biliyorsunuz. Bu makalemizde “get” fiiilinin pek çok farklı kullanımını inceleyeceğiz.

Get = obtain / edinmek

Get = arrive (informal) / varmak (günlük dilde)
I usually get home from work at 5.30. / We’ll get to İstanbul on Sunday evening.

Get something for a good price ya da get a bargain on something: bir şeyi uygun fiyata almak anlamında kullanılabilen kalıplardır.
You can get an English course at Cambly for a good price especially now as there is an ongoing campaign!
Get’in satın almak anlamında kullanıldığı bir diğer yer ise, bir restoran ya da kafede sipariş verirken kullanımıdır:
“Can I got a large coffee?” “Can I get some french fries?”
Get = bring / getirmek
Örneğin, yatakta üşüdüğünüzde eşinizden şöyle bir talepte bulunabilirsiniz: “Can you get me an extra blanket?”
Birinin bir şeyi getirmek için başka bir yere gitmesini gerektiren durumlar için genellikle go get kalıbı kullanılır. Örneğin, toplantı odasında yeterli sandalye olmadığında asistanınızdan şu şekilde yardım isteyebilirsiniz: “Could you please go get more chairs?” Ya da masaya çatal koymayı unuttuğunuzda: “I’ll go get forks for us.”
Get = become / haline gelmek, olmak
Get angry / get excited / get sick / get older / get worse / get tired
Get lost ifadesi hem ‘kaybolmak’ hem de ‘çekil gözümün önünden’ anlamlarında kullanılır.
“I got lost on my first day in Barcelona.”
“Get lost! You are annoying me!”
Become anlamında gelen get kullanımı medeni hal değişiklikleri için de kullanılmaktadır.
Get married / get engaged / get divorced
Get’in become anlamında kullanılabileceği birkaç örnek:
Get dressed / get ready / get drunk / get used to something
Get = understand / anlamak
I don’t get why they broke up; they seemed to have a perfect relationship.
I don’t get how to use this device. It’s far too complicated.
I didn’t get the joke.
Get to do something = have a special opportunity / bir şey yapma şansına sahip olmak
“I feel so blessed I got to be a part of this team.”
If you clean your room, you get to watch an episode of your favorite series on Netflix.
I am upset because I did not get to take a vacation this year.
Have got to do something = obligation, should / zorunluluk, -meli
I’ve got to pick up my dog from the vet.
If you borrow books from the library, you’ve got to return them.
Rome is amazing, you’ve got to see it there!
- “I’ve got to go.” kısaca “Gotta go.” olarak da kullanılır.
Get someone to do something = persuade or convince them to do something / ikna etmek
After a lot of discussions, I finally got him to agree with me.
It’s hard to get my kids to help me with housework.
Get something done = make it happen or cause something to happen / yaptırmak
My car has broken down. I need to get it fixed.
I went to the beauty salon to get my nails done.
To get someone, ayrıca birini yakalamak için kullanılır. Mesela polis bir suçluyu yakaladığında / bulduğunda şöyle diyebilir;
Get’in bir çok phrasal verb içinde kullanıldığını da sık sık görmekteyiz. Bunlardan bazılarını incelemek gerekirse:
Get along with someone = have a good relationship / iyi anlaşmak
I’m glad I get along with all the tutors I met on Cambly.
I don’t get along with one of my co-workers. I find him so annoying.
Get back = return to a place / dönmek
I’m not sure what time I’ll get back home.
Get back at someone = take revenge / intikam almak
After he lost his job, he vowed that he would find a way to get back at his old boss.
Get over = recover emotionally from a difficult experience / atlatmak, unutmak (bir üzüntüyü)
It took him a long time to get over after his grandfather passed away.
Get wind of something = hear or learn about something indirectly / duyum almak
His parents got wind of the house party through social media.
Get your act together = become better organized and prepared / işleri daha etkili çözebilmek için faaliyetlerini daha iyi düzenlemek (get it together olarak da kullanılır.)
Get used to= alışmak
Get in the groove = enter a state of concentration and productivity / havaya girmek (bir şey için)
